Pumping Accommodation Tips for Employers

Provide a private space with a lock

It's important for a nursing mom to be confident that the space she's using to pump is 100% private. Ensure all doors have well-functioning locks and any windows have opaque coverings. Given the act of pumping is gathering food for her child, a nursing mom should never be asked to use a restroom. A small conference room, vacant office, or converted storage area are most ideal.

Plan for availability and accessibility

A nursing mom is already strapped for time - see 24 Hours with a Nursing Mom for a snapshot - so the quicker she can get in and out of the private space, the better. Try to avoid having her fetch a key, hunt for an open room, or wait in line for the space. Thoughtful processes and policies can be put in place to help make pumping sessions a smooth experience that leave her feeling supported and productive.

Keep functionality in mind

While some breast pumps are battery-operated, many require access to an electrical outlet. The outlet in the pumping space should also be near a counter top, table, or desk where a pump can be placed without fear of it tipping over or sitting somewhere unsanitary. Pumping sessions can take up to 30 minutes so be sure to have a comfortable chair situated within arm's reach of the outlet and tabletop.

Offer access to cold storage

After a nursing mom finishes a pumping session, she'll need somewhere to store her expressed milk. A breakroom refrigerator is sufficient but consider adding a more private storage option where she can be confident her milk won't be tampered with. The refrigerator should be kept at 39 °F / 4 °C or colder.

Go the extra mile!

There are many more ways you can help make pumping at work successful and comfortable for your employee. Here's a few that go above and beyond the bare minimum:

  • Add a mirror so she can check that her clothes are repositioned properly.

  • Dedicate a thermostat to the pumping space so she can adjust it to the optimal temperature.

  • Have a sink in the room and a little dish soap so she can wash her pumping accessories.

  • Provide a pump that's hospital-grade to make pumping sessions even quicker and more efficient.

  • Keep snacks and water on hand so she can stay hydrated and nourished - bonus points if they're lactation snacks!
